Amazon birds of prey comic1/22/2024 ![]() There is a measure of eye candy to Bellaire’s coloring that adds a kind of timeless excitement. When walls are muted, furniture is bright and pops off the page. Settings often contain vivid elements but are never vivid in their entirety. As with the art, the colors again call to mind pulp comics, in this case the brightest varieties. It’s very effective, and Romero achieves it without overselling.īellaire’s coloring fits Romero’s style for the book perfectly. ![]() At one point Harley looks on the verge of tears. Emotions run the gamut from anger to elation, covering everything in between. Romero pays close attention to the characters’ eyes and eyebrows. This success with emotional displays is especially effective during the many character closeups as the issue goes on. The linework is at a minimum–the barest necessary for the characters to convey clear emotions. It’s easy to recognize similarities to artists such as Max Plaisted, Jack Binder, and many others. The art in BIRDS OF PREY #1 immediately calls to mind old pulp comics. BIRDS OF PREY #1 is playing the series’ cards close to the vest. Further, a few lines of dialogue suggest that Barbara’s absence–which some fans of the original run were upset over–might be a plot point or part of a character arc down the line rather than an arbitrary choice. Readers who are skeptical of the team composition going in will see that there is a story based reason for everyone who’s on it. The issue builds to a moment of strong but understated tension at the end. But action is interspersed along the way, and it keeps the story moving nicely. It makes the first issue especially compelling. This is a new team for a new purpose (at least to start–it will no doubt continue together afterward). Thompson doesn’t treat the team in the same way the Titans and Justice League usually are–that their existence is a foregone conclusion and they don’t need a particular reason to form or stay together. Perhaps the most important part of the issue is that it’s never a foregone conclusion that the Birds of Prey need to be reformed. Each character gets a brief moment that supports why Dinah has selected them. It also tells us why each member is chosen. The story introduces the new team’s goal. Enter Harley Quinn.īIRDS OF PREY #1 is just what you want in the first issue of a team book. But even after signing up everyone on her list, Dinah thinks the team needs one more. Meanwhile, Dinah meets up with Zealot, recruiting her with ease. At first Big Barda is resistant, but when Cass tells her that the team is coming together to save Dinah’s sister, Big Barda signs up. Cass tracks down Dinah’s next choice–Big Barda. What’s more important than a sister, after all? The two women split up from there. Dinah worries that Cassandra Cain will be a hard sell, but she signs up with no argument. BIRDS OF PREY #1 tracks Dinah as she recruits a team for the mission. Surfer lingo hoonie1/22/2024 ![]() In contrast to the aggressive, fast-paced vernacular often associated with shortboard surfing, longboard language subtly echoes the grace, flow and inherent calm of the longboarding experience. Similarly, phrases like ‘hang five’ or ‘hang ten’ – both referring to the act of positioning either five or all ten toes over the nose of the board – imply a certain nonchalant skill. Take the term ‘cruise’, for instance, which in longboarding lingo refers to effortlessly gliding along the wave, a reflection of the tranquil nature of their surfing style. Longboard surfers, known for their relaxed and laid-back style, infuse their language with terms that embody this chill approach. While both longboarders and shortboarders use common surf lingo, there are distinct differences in terminology that reflect the divergent styles and techniques of these two forms of surfing. How does longboard lingo and shortboard lingo differ? In essence, these surfer slang terms represent a rich cultural tapestry woven together by a tight-knit global community bonded by their love for the ocean and the thrill of riding waves. They also serve a practical purpose, allowing surfers to communicate quickly and efficiently about wave conditions, technique and surf safety. They were then echoed in pop culture and media, which only solidified their legitimacy amongst surfers.īut surfing terms aren’t just about novelty or maintaining a distinctive identity. Words like ‘gnarly’ and ‘stoked’, which are now part of the mainstream vernacular, originated from this era. Surfing lingo has its roots in the 1950s and 60s, when surfing culture exploded in popularity amongst the broader public in California and Hawaii.Īs the lifestyle expanded, so did the unique vocabulary used by surfers to describe their experiences on the waves. Just like any subculture, surfers developed their own unique language as a way of encapsulating their shared experiences and the specific environment in which they surf. This means you can book a longboard week or a stay at our village or retreat today – no PhD in surfer slang needed! How did surf slang and surfer lingo develop? Then, once in the water, they’ll provide easy-to-understand instructions to ensure you know exactly what to do in order to catch some epic rides! Our surf coaches will brief you before paddling out and give you a crash course on surf slang. Is it necessary to learn the different words and phrases before learning to surf though?Ībsolutely not: an inexperienced surfer can still catch waves without being fluent in Surfanese. You might feel slightly apprehensive about the fact that surfing has its own rich language. Let’s get cracking! Do I need to understand ‘Surfanese’ to learn surfing? How terms differ between longboarders and shortboarders. ![]() How and where surf slang first developed.Whether it’s necessary to know surf lingo as a beginner surfer or inexperienced surfer. So, here’s our attempt at helping you understand ‘Surfanese’. There are lots more surfer slang where those words came from, but we want you to enjoy your trip without feeling like you need to learn a whole new language. You might even say they’re just the tip of a (very interesting and sometimes hard-to-decipher) iceberg. Truth is though that these are milder examples of surf slang and lingo. If you have no idea what these words mean when they come out of a surfer’s mouth, you might call an ambulance thinking they’ve gone insane. Surfers are responsible for coming up with some of the most outlandish words and sayings of any sport. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" has a time signature of 9/8. "This allowed college students to be different, in the sense of adding a funky twist to it." "Take Five," which was conceived by Brubeck's saxophonist Paul Desmond, is in 5/4 with the accent pattern one two three four five, so each measure can be thought of as being split into two uneven chunks. Langham says that from a dance point of view, the meter of "Take Five" combines a waltz and a two-step, both of which were popular in the 1950s and 1960s with the parents of teenagers. 4/4 means that there are four beats and a quarter note lasts for one beat, yielding four quarter notes in each measure.) " Take Five" and " Blue Rondo a la Turk," two of Brubeck's most popular works, are both on Time Out. (The first number, which is the top number of the time signature in sheet music, represents the number of beats in the measure, and the second number represents the note value that receives one beat. Time Out, the hit 1959 album by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, was one of the first popular jazz works to explore meters beyond the traditional 4/4 and 3/4. "He sort of tired of the traditional patterns of jazz," says Patrick Langham, a saxophonist and faculty member of the Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. ![]() The pianist and composer was an innovator, especially when it came to combining rhythms and meters in new ways. Killer whales are extremely intelligent marine mammals that have been known to strategically hunt great whites. However, now it’s believed that animal is actually the killer whale, aka orca. It was once thought that the great white shark was the apex predator of the ocean. This “Synthetic Imagery” (or GAN Art) was fantastic, but a bit difficult and slow to use. Hi everyone! The “Prompt To Image” processes are blossoming everywhere on the web since Katherine Crowson presented the VQGAN+CLIP tool and made it public. Maybe it’ll create a new job: “digital ideas provider”. I’ll make more, concept art for characters, using initial sketches to create something else, etc. I began to make tutorials (on YT) for digital artists, how they could use this. Unfair, maybe, but people have fun, and are creative (in their own way), and I kind of like it. Today, to get cool images, you have to know what words are useful, and how to combine them. There’s no horse-skill in driving fast cars, it’s like… unfair, right? Drivers developed other skills. Some sites offer this already, in a simple form: Wombo Art, Hypnogram.xyz. Concept artists will use these tools (or teach them), for sketching, to get ideas, for colors, composition, etc. There are hundreds of colabs, and very soon (this year, next year?) you’ll be able to get images in seconds. If you use the free option, you need one hour for an image. Today, it’s a bit difficult to use these Google Colabs. It’s not “real art” (and is it, after all)? And I’ve been banned from many of them! The viewers love them, but the moderators hate them. So, people love it, but some want to ban it. When I post images in forums, like in Reddit, I got things like: I can drive a car, but I can’t take care of a horse (and I’m short of room in my apartment). I can switch on the light, but I don’t have an oil lamp. In a way, I understand that!īut what I feel is they should use it, today. So I found out that some digital artists find it “unfair”. “Luminescent mushrooms in a mystical forest, twilight, fireflies, clearing, bokeh” gives as many as these as you want (hundreds, if you like): I just describe what I want, add some little tricks in words (I’m learning) to precise textures (painting, digital, video game?), and I get pictures, plenty of them, all unique and different. Today I make images with AIs, and that’s cool because… I don’t know how to draw. Electric cars will harm the gas stations, little by little (in Norway, today, more than 60% of new cars are electric). When the talking pictures came, these people were in the streets, protesting. I remember the little book of Akira Kurosawa, who remembers that when the movies were silent in Japan, there were people in each cinema, playing music, dialogs, and some sound effect.
